Glory is a Bible word for sure. When we glorify someone it means we speak of their value and worth in a public way. New parents glorify their infants. They speak of their weight and length as if they alone possessed such qualities. It is good for parents to give worth to their kids......not too much....not too little but just the right amount. Humans glorify some pretty strange things......my team, my pet, my car, my house, my career. The Egyptians gave great glory and value to their gods too. The Nile River, the sun, their live stock and their firstborn to name a few.
Misplaced glory does not sit well with Almighty God. Some scholars have noted that every one of the plagues on Egypt was aimed either at the false gods or the strong cultural beliefs that the Egyptians were fanatical about. In their great pride they thought they had a government and gods in place to prevent things like boils and insects. They thought they had cures for sick live stock and sick humans.
The elite religious leaders had no answer for frogs in their homes. The powerful military was destroyed in one day. All these authorities were tied to the deep spiritual stronghold of Satan himself who did his best to divert the Egyptians away from the Living God. So the Almighty kept his promise: "I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt." It was no contest. Have you noticed in the book of Exodus that God is deeply concerned about his reputation? Let my people go that they may worship me. God loves it when we recognize his worth and speak of it in a public way. He doesn't play nice with those who would steal his glory.
Check these three statements:
(Oh yeah......check out another big but in the Bible!)
I will harden Pharaoh's heart and he will pursue them. BUT I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army. Ex. 14:4
And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army. Ex. 14:17
The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen. Ex. 14:18
We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Give God glory or prepare for trouble.
Jesus said if we don't speak up the rocks will! We gotta be smarter than the rocks. Today speak of God's worth and value in a public way. Moses' song in Exodus 15 is a good place to start.
